Teaching Experiences

HOME
I will be starting my fifteenth year of teaching as a full-time art instructor this fall of 2003 at Southwest Virginia Community College. It is a rewarding and fulfilling vocation to engage on a daily basis in the communication flow between teacher and learner. There is always the possibility that the student will be significantly empowered by their grasp of knowledge and new ways of perceiving, that growth, change and fulfillment will evolve in their life. These same three potential results of educational interchange continue to revitalize my experience as a teacher each semester and each year.

Part of my teaching philosophy about art education is that the majority of human beings have natural creative ability that is just waiting to be tapped or has already been actualized. I also believe that most people can learn to draw, at whatever age. I think that giving creative expression to one’s ideas and emotions, whether through music, visual arts, writing, cooking, break dancing, yodeling, or gardening, etc. etc., is always positive, healthy and rewarding.

I have attempted to put my philosophy into practice through numerous teaching endeavors ranging from initiating hands-on studio projects and art history student debates, to involving students in field trips to New York City, service learning in after school art programs, and community mural designing and painting. In the realm of my own professional development, my activities have ranged from directing our SVCC Art Gallery and previously an Arts Across the Curriculum program, to participating in a U.S. State Department sponsored faculty exchange in Ivanovo, Russia. One thing about the teaching profession – it’s never dull!

The classes I am offering this Fall Semester, 2003 are:

  • Drawing I & Drawing III (ART 121-01 and ART 221-01)
  • Art History I (ART 201-01)
