Independence
graphite drawing

Independence emerged out of a frustrated clash between my 19-year-old rebelling (at the time) son and my mid-life crisis (at the time) self! On a snowy day with time to think and nowhere to go, I attacked paper with pencil and used an exaggerated image to symbolize my son’s “turning of his back” on us, his parents, in his typically human search for his own direction and independence. What emerged at the end of this therapeutic process, was a literal “light at the end of the tunnel,” that bright spot in the upper right corner that, five years later, became a reality as my husband and I now share a wonderful adult relationship with our son.

This drawing is owned by the artist.
