Hope I
watercolor & prismacolor pencil

Hope I watercolor & prismacolor pencil by Ellen Elmes

Hope I is the first work of a series of three that evolved out a reoccurring theme in my art – that of a natural subject serving as a metaphor for the human psyche. In this case, I chose a tree to express an evolution of the springing of hope from an anguished soul. In this first work of the series, hope is represented as raw and brawling, tough and strong, as when a person first proclaims out of desperation, “I can lick this problem!” The other two works that follow (not shown here) become more mellow, lighter, and complex as a person actualizes the digging out from under all the complexities towards fulfillment of one’s hope. The beech tree depicted here was one first sketched in Scotland on the grounds of a castle in the dramatic light of dusk.
