Unionizing in the Coalfields
by Ellen Elmes

Mary Harris Jones, better known as “Mother Jones” by the miners who struggled to organize the United Mine Workers of America in the coalfields of the early 1900’s, is shown here marching to further the cause of fair labor practices in Virginia, West Virginia, Colorado, and Kansas. In the background, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is shown shaking the hand of a miner during a tour of the southern coalfields to lend his support to pro-labor legislation in the 1930’s.
